On May 9, 2024, the Centro Filipinas Business Forum in Madrid served as a gathering point for a distinguished audience of diplomats, business leaders, and investors, all focused on the burgeoning economic opportunities in the Philippines. The event, moderated by Ms. Monika Kamille L. Limpo, First Secretary and Consul, and aptly named the “Philippine Investment and Tax Briefing,” was organized by the Philippine Embassy and provided a deep dive into the attractive landscape for foreign investments in the Philippines.

The briefing was graced by prominent figures such as His Excellency Philippe J. Lhuillier, the Philippine Ambassador to Spain, and Mr. Mark Francis Hamoy, Consul General of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid. A standout moment was the presentation by Mr. Raymond Abrea, Chief Tax Advisor at the Asian Consulting Group – ACG, who launched his insightful book, “Why Invest in The Philippines, A Guide to Investing and Doing Business in the Philippines.”

Key topics discussed were:

  • Economic Information in the Philippines: Emphasizing the country’s stable growth and strategic advantages.
  • Investment Opportunities: Identifying growth sectors that align with sustainable and responsible business practices.
  • Tax Incentives for Foreign Investors: Highlighting fiscal incentives that encourage sustainable developments.
  • Tax Updates: Discussing the comprehensive tax reform program, simplification of tax processes, and tax considerations in the digital economy.
  • Common Questions from Foreign Investors: Addressing queries particularly from a sustainability perspective.

The ESG Institute was represented by Jaime Amoedo, Executive Director and Co-founder, who emphasised the Institute’s mission to integrate environmental, social, and governance principles into core business practices globally. With over 500 experts worldwide, The ESG Institute not only promotes sustainable investment but also provides businesses with clear guidance, tools, and products to fully integrate ESG principles at the heart of their operations.

This briefing reinforced the Philippines’ position as a compelling destination for investments that prioritize sustainability, supported by progressive governmental policies and an increasing focus on ESG standards. For companies aiming to integrate sustainability into their expansion strategies, The ESG Institute offers strategic insights and comprehensive support.

The EU Just Watered Down Its Supply Chain Law – Don’t Relax Yet

Brussels has slashed the reach of its landmark human rights and environmental due diligence law, pushing enforcement to 2029 and shrinking its scope by roughly 70%. For Bangladeshi exporters, the legal net just got smaller — but European buyers are already writing the same expectations into their own contracts.

Bangladesh Has Until December to Build Its Circular Textile Strategy. The EU Is Watching and Waiting to See If It Is Real

On April 23, the Ministry of Commerce held a national stakeholder consultation on a draft National Strategy on Circular Economy for Textiles — covering 2026 to 2031. BGMEA, BKMEA, and BTMA all showed up. The EU delegation attended. UNIDO and Chatham House provided technical support. The target: finalise the strategy by end of 2026. Whether this becomes real policy or another archived document is the governance question that defines Bangladesh's next decade of RMG exports.
