Despite these challenges, many employees remain optimistic, eager to adapt, and ready to embrace new technologies like generative AI (GenAI) to improve efficiency.

Balancing Change and Well-being

Leaders must support employees through rapid changes to prevent burnout and increase engagement. Utilizing technologies like GenAI can drive efficiency and innovation, but only with proper employee training and involvement. Investing in skill-building and a positive employee experience is crucial for retention and performance.

Change is here, but are we ready? According to PwC’s latest Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey, over half of workers feel overwhelmed by the amount of change happening in their workplaces. Despite these challenges, many employees remain optimistic, eager to adapt, and ready to embrace new technologies like generative AI (GenAI) to improve efficiency.

Workers’ readiness for change comes with mixed feelings. More than half of surveyed employees feel optimistic about their company’s future amidst recent changes, yet 44% don’t understand why these changes are necessary. This confusion underscores the importance of clear communication from leadership about the reasons for transformation.

“Employees are willing to adapt,” the survey finds, “but they need to understand the ‘why’ behind the changes.” Leaders must bridge this gap to foster a workforce that is not just compliant but actively engaged in driving change.

Leading Through Transformation

Leadership plays a critical role in guiding employees through periods of intense change. Two-thirds of employees have experienced more workplace changes in the last year compared to previous years. This constant flux can lead to change fatigue, impacting productivity and morale.

To counteract this, leaders should focus on building resilience. “It’s essential that leaders recognise the stress change can bring,” the survey suggests, “and prioritize well-being as a core value within their organization.” Creating a culture that encourages work-life balance, setting realistic expectations, and communicating openly can help maintain employee morale and performance.

Empowering Through GenAI

GenAI presents significant opportunities for innovation and efficiency, but its adoption remains limited. While 61% of workers have used GenAI at least once in the past year, daily or weekly usage is far less common. To fully leverage GenAI’s potential, leaders must encourage experimentation and provide the necessary training.

“Workers and CEOs are aligned on the need to reduce inefficiencies,” the survey notes, “but they need the right tools and skills to do so.” Providing access to GenAI and promoting a culture of innovation can empower employees to explore new ways of working, driving both personal and organizational growth.

Upskilling for the Future

Skill-building is a top priority for today’s workforce. Nearly half of the employees view opportunities for learning new skills as a deciding factor in staying with their current employer. However, only 46% feel their employers provide adequate upskilling opportunities, highlighting a significant area for improvement.

“Upskilling is not just a perk, it’s a necessity,” the survey emphasizes. Employers who invest in comprehensive skill development programs can boost job satisfaction and retention, while also preparing their workforce for future challenges.

Prioritizing Employee Experience

A positive employee experience is crucial for maintaining engagement and productivity. Yet, many workers feel gaps between what they need—like fair pay, flexibility, and fulfilling work—and what they receive. Addressing these gaps can significantly enhance employee morale and performance.

“Fair pay, flexibility, and purpose in work are highly valued,” according to the survey. “Leaders must strive to meet these needs to maintain a motivated and productive workforce.”
